Styling your session
get ready for your family or maternity session!
As you can probably see throughout my portfolios I mostly work with a neutral colour palate, I find this the best for achieving beautiful skin tones and golden glow in your images, It helps to bring the subjects out of the background and ensures the images don't look too busy or untidy.
White, Brown, Tan, Cream, Black(shorts/jeans for boys), Denim are my go to colours throughout my work. Feel free to play with some subtle patterns or textures but limiting it to one-two family members and ensuring the patterns don't clash is important. A subtle floral dress for mum or pin stripes for dad/kids always looks lovely.
Avoiding big logos or bright patterns on shirts and consider a button up, knit or collared type shirt for the men.
For footwear I recommend boots or sandal type shoes, or of course closed in smart dress shoes such as vans.
Keep accessories limited, sticking to your favorite simple earrings, necklace and/or rings, No sunglasses, hats or chains for dad please.
Styling your session
get ready for your newborn session
I have a large range of clothing options for mums, some shirts for dads and bits and pieces for most sizes boys, a few girls dresses (these are limited) please browse my instagram and the link in the client portal to the client wardrobe, let me know of anything you love and send through all inspiration photos so I can get an idea of what to bring and how your session will look.
Please make sure hands was well washed (yes I'm talking to all you boilermakers and mechanics) as best you can for any close shots where your hands are in the frame.
It's best if shirts are steamed or ironed prior to the session unless they are linen look & intended to look a bit rustic. I do have quite a few wardrobe options for the family if you are stuck I'll likely have back up! I also have a steamer if we need to steam items at the studio we can do so.
Hair can be straight, curled or up! whatever you feel most comfortable with and I recommend neutral and soft glam make up.
Please remember to remove any keys, wallets or phone from pockets.
The Day of Your Session
I understand there can be some anxiety around children and photoshoots, the thought that they won't smile or they'll misbehave - trust me I get it! but please please don't stress about it, I find most kids respond to low key ideas and suggestions rather than strict stand and smile instructions, rather than getting upset if they aren't cooperating we can let them run a bit wild and try to incorporate them into the session where we can. Sometimes it takes a good 20 minutes or so for children to warm up to the idea of someone with a big camera taking their photo. Give them time to get use to my presence and feel safe with me.
Snacks can be a great idea to keep the kids happy and avoid anyone getting hangry.. some little treats for gentle bribery is welcome too. If possible its best to avoid giving them the phone because it can be really tricky to get it back from them for photos, understandably this is sometimes the only way to soothe them and if its necessary we will work with it.
Please message me with any questions or concerns you have before your session, if there are any significant details I should know about your family or if you need any styling advice. Im always on for a chat - best contact is via instagram but you can reach me through email as-well.
